Makeover event helps cancer patients cope with hair, skin issues
Cancer patients who are undergoing treatment with chemotherapy or radiation therapy expect to experience side effects like nausea, fatigue and possible hair loss. But they may not realize that those treatments can cause additional side effects like dry skin, rashes and complexion changes.
To help patients cope with these hair and skin issues, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center is offering, “Look Good…Feel Better,” a makeover class designed specifically for cancer patients who are currently undergoing therapy. The free session is open to cancer patients, no matter where they are receiving their treatment.
The American Cancer Society-sponsored session will be held Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Vanderbilt Breast Center at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks. To help patients celebrate the season, the classroom will feature special holiday-themed decorations.
During the class, participants learn how to apply makeup to give the impression of eyelashes and how to draw their own eyebrows. They will receive tips on ways to deal with skin issues and will have a chance to practice devising head coverings using practical and inexpensive head gear.
In addition to hair and makeup tips, participants will be treated to a light, healthy lunch.
Each woman is given a free supply of brand-name cosmetics and other products worth hundreds of dollars.
