Masys to offer informatics insights at Gulf oil spill scientific workshop

Dan Masys, M.D., professor and chair of Biomedical Informatics, will discuss ways to monitor the health effects of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill during a workshop in New Orleans Tuesday and Wednesday, June 22-23.

The workshop, which is open to the public, was organized by the Institute of Medicine at the request of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. It will assemble “the best available scientific expertise” to discuss ways to assess potential health risks related to the spill, an IOM official said.

Masys, a nationally known expert on biomedical information, will participate Wednesday in a discussion of research methodologies and data sources that could be used in surveillance and monitoring activities.

“I think the creative part of this will be to use newly emerging communications media — the world of blogs, tweets and SMS texts — to expand on the traditional public health surveillance methods,” he said.
