Meet to explore chemistry of antibiotics chemistry

Vanderbilt University will host an international conference on the chemistry of antibiotics and other bioactive compounds Aug. 12-15 at the Student Life Center.

Speakers include:

• William Fenical, Ph.D., of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, whose talk is entitled "A new source for antibiotics in the deep ocean;"

• Alois Fürstner, Ph.D., of the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Germany, who will discuss the evaluation of structurally complex anti-cancer agents; and

• Amos Smith, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Molecular Discovery, who will describe the synthesis of tedanolide, a natural antibiotic with anti-tumor activity.

Gary Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Vanderbilt, chairs the conference advisory board.

Vanderbilt speakers include Brian Bachmann, Ph.D., assistant professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry; Craig Lindsley, Ph.D., associate professor of Pharmacology; Jeffrey Johnston, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry; and Michael Stone, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Deadline for registration is Aug. 10.
