Vanderbilt sponsors mass CPR training day

Vanderbilt University Medical Center is one of the sponsors of a mass CPR training day on Saturday, March 9.

In an effort to help save lives that are lost as a result of sudden cardiac arrest, the American Heart Association and the Nashville Fire Department will train people in Davidson and Williamson counties at designated fire hall locations during a free two-hour class.

Classes will be offered 9-11 a.m. and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. To register call the toll-free number 1-877-AHA-4-CPR or 1-877-242-4277.

Asthma workshop is March 6

A free workshop for asthmatic children and their parents will be held March 9 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the S.S. Kresgre Learning Resource Center, across from Metro General Hospital.

The workshop, sponsored by the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and the American Lung Association of Tennessee, will provide educational tips on asthma, new treatments that are available and caring for children who suffer from asthma.

Asthma affects more than 12 million Americans, including about 10 percent of all children under the age of 18.

Asthma is a disease of the bronchial tubes, or airways of the lungs, characterized by tightening of these airways. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, tightening in the chest, and wheezing. It is a chronic disease; people with asthma live with it every day and very often for their whole lives.
