Dr. R. Daniel Beauchamp, John L. Sawyers Professor of Surgery and professor of Cell Biology, has been elected to a one-year term as president of the Society of University Surgeons.

He is only the second Vanderbilt University faculty member elected to the position, which was held by Dr. H. William Scott in 1960 when he was professor and chairman of Surgery at Vanderbilt.

Beauchamp, who is serving his fifth year on the society's executive council, will preside over the society's annual meeting in Toronto in February 2000.

Established in 1938, the Society of University Surgeons is dedicated to the advancement of the science and art of surgery. Members, who are elected, must be on the surgery faculty at an American or Canadian university, and active membership is restricted to 250. Many current and past leaders in surgery have served on the society's executive council.

Beauchamp also serves as director of the division of Surgical Oncology, deputy director of clinical programs for the Vanderbilt Cancer Center and administrative physician co-director of the Oncology Patient Care Center.
