Victoria Harris ponders a question from the audience while her fellow panelists prepare for their responses at a recent HIV/AIDS conference. The two-day conference, “Issues, Ethics and You: A Community Discussion of HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse Research and Treatment,” was held at the Sheraton Music City Hotel to address some of the ethical questions and regulatory issues that arise in clinical research and treatment of HIV/AIDS and substance abuse. Speakers from Vanderbilt, Meharry, Metro Health Department, National Institues of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and community-based treatment and advocacy organizations participated in the conference. Also pictured, left to right, are Dr. Vladamur Berthaud, director of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Meharry Medical College, Alberta Hardison, chair of the Vanderbilt HIV Vaccine Community Advisory Board, and Thomas Mather, program coordinator of the Meharry Program in Clinical and Research Ethics, which co-sponsored the conference.
