Michael Waterman, Ph.D., right, introduces Roger Cone, Ph.D., who delivered last week's Discovery Lecture. Cone is director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Obesity and Metabolism, chair of the Department of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics, and the Joe C. Davis Chair in Biomedical Science.

He described his group's efforts to identify compounds that, by modulating melanocortin signaling in the brain, could lead to new treatments for morbid obesity. Waterman is the Natalie Overall Warren Distinguished Professor and former chair of the Department of Biochemistry.
