Public turns out for cancer screening at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks

Vanderbilt University Medical Center and community dermatologists screened more than 150 patients at the dermatology clinic at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks last month at a skin cancer screening.

The event was sponsored by the Nashville Dermatological Society and the American Academy of Dermatology, and hosted by Vanderbilt.

“Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.,” said Amy Valet, M.D., a Vanderbilt graduate and fourth-year resident who was one of approximately 20 physicians and 15 nurses who volunteered to help screen patients.

“We have a culture that values sun exposure and tanning,” she added.
One patient who came to the screening was former Vanderbilt employee Mimi Klein, who noted that she grew up going to the beach constantly.

“I never get in the sun anymore, but I did as a kid,” she said.

Community skin cancer screenings are typically held annually, to coincide with the time of the year when people are more likely to be outdoors.
