Rising Fast — an update on VUCM construction projects

Here’s a brief look at several of the major construction projects under way around the Vanderbilt University Medical Center campus.

Medical Research Building IV
Construction start — spring 2004
Expected completion — fall 2007
Cost — $151 million
Features — 385,000-square-foot addition atop Light Hall and Langford Auditorium significantly increases available research space.

VUH Critical Care Tower, Phase II
Construction start — December 2006
Expected Completion — fall 2009
Cost — $169 million
Features — The 10-story tower (and mechanical penthouse), which is being constructed above VUH's Emergency Department, will add 141 acute-care beds as well as 12 new operating suites.

MCN Centralized Vivarium Addition

Cost — $30.1 million
Features — This five-floor, 57,000-square-foot addition atop the Institute of Imaging Sciences will house the centralized vivarium and a gross anatomy lab.

Parking Garage (former site of Medical Center South)

Cost — $25.5 million
Features — Medical Center South was torn down to make way for the new garage, a two-level expansion to the existing Central Garage, a four-level expansion of the East Garage and a pedestrian walkway above 21st Avenue North that connects to the Villages at Vanderbilt.

Features — Renovation of 48,778 square feet of space in the South Garage Office Building. When complete, the <a href='http://www.vanderbilthealth.com/eyeinstitute'>Vanderbilt Eye Institute</a> will also house the Tennessee Lion's Pediatric Eye Clinic, a refractive laser suite and diagnostics area, an optical retail shop, departmental offices and 40 subspecialty exam/treatment rooms.

Cost — $2.1 million

Features — Renovation of classroom space.

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Clinic Expansion

Construction start — March 2007

Expected completion — December 2008

Cost — $16.5 million to $20 million

Features — Expansion and renovation of four floors within The Vanderbilt Clinic. Expansion will nearly double useable space from 58,000 square feet to 116,000 square feet. Affected clinics include the Cancer Clinic, Cancer Infusion, Stem Cell Clinic and Thoracic Clinic.
