William Schaffner, M.D., chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine, was presented with the Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor Award for distinguished accomplishment in furthering the aims of Vanderbilt at last week's Faculty Assembly.

“Perhaps best known for being the news media's go-to expert on infection-related public health issues, Bill brings a familiar, respected voice into American homes — along with the Vanderbilt name,” Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos said.

“Bill informs without frightening and conveys solid science in clear, easy-to-understand language that the average person can comprehend. For Bill's extraordinary contributions to the University and for his service to the public health of our society, which has inspired countless student and colleagues, he is highly deserving of the Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor Award.”
