School of Medicine students plunge into their studies

Members of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Class of 2015 got an early start on their medical educations last week with orientation sessions and various welcoming events.

At one of those events, the new first-year students made a splash at the annual welcoming picnic at the home of Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., vice chancellor for Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.

There are 104 students in this year’s class, split evenly between men and women. Students hail from 36 states and countries including Canada, China, Haiti, Iran, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Fifty-six universities and colleges are represented, and 19 students are underrepresented minority students. Eleven class members already have masters degrees and one class member has a Ph.D.

This year’s class sports a mean class GPA of 3.8 and mean class MCAT of 11.6.
