Founded in 1993, the TTS includes representatives from each transplant center in Tennessee as well as the two organ procurement organizations – Tennessee Donor Services and Mid-South in Memphis.

TTS is a volunteer organization interested in promoting organ and tissue recovery, transplantation and histocompatibility in Tennessee. The purpose is to provide better health care by encouraging access to organs and tissue.

Among the goals of the group, said Shaffer, is a semi-annual review of organ procurement and distribution within the state to help ensure the equitable distribution of deceased donor organs.

“In particular, there are some concerns regarding the current allocation of deceased donor kidneys in Tennessee,” said Shaffer. “TTS has begun to re-evaluate that along with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and the DCI tissue typing lab.”

Shaffer will serve as president for two years.
