Dr. Bradley E. Smith, professor of Anesthesiology, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology this week at the 34th annual meeting in Hilton Head, S.C.

Smith was the first anesthesiologist in the United States to complete a post residency fellowship dedicated to the problems of anesthesia in obstetrics [at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York]. Smith was the director of Obstetric Anesthesia Services at Yale and at the University of Miami before becoming chairman of the department of Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt in 1969 — a post he held for nearly 24 years.

Smith continues to serve full time in the delivery of anesthesia services. He is currently the director of Anesthesia Services in the Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit at The Vanderbilt Clinic.
