Songwriting workshop to aid cancer patients

With the help of a singer-songwriter on Music Row, cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones and health care providers from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center will be making music together in a new program called “Songs from the Heart.”

The group will join local singer/songwriter Trisha Walker for a two-day songwriting workshop at Gilda's Club on May 16-17. The workshop will allow cancer patients and other invited guests to learn how to write song lyrics about their experiences with cancer. Walker will take the lyrics and put them to original music once the workshop ends, and then everyone will come together Friday, May 19, at 6 p.m. for a special concert featuring a live performance of each song.

The concert will be held at the Scarritt Bennett Center. Seating is limited and reservations are encouraged. Donations will be accepted at the door and all proceeds will benefit The Caring Hearts Fund at Vanderbilt-Ingram. The Caring Hearts Fund was established in 2005 to help patients with financial hardships during treatment.
