Topol set for next Discovery Lecture

Cardiologist Eric Topol, M.D., director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in La Jolla, Calif., will present the next Discovery Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 29.

His talk, "How Digitizing Human Beings Changed the Future of Medicine," will begin at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall.

Topol, a cardiologist and geneticist who gained prominence for raising concerns about the safety of rofecoxib (Vioxx), has been at the forefront of individualized medicine and “wireless medicine,” a field that incorporates wireless technology to monitor patients’ vital signs and other medical data.

Topol uses the genome and digital technologies to understand individuals at the molecular level to determine appropriate therapies and prevention.

Topol, who is also the Gary and Mary West Endowed Chair of Innovative Medicine, chief academic officer, Scripps Health, professor of Translational Genomics, the Scripps Research Institute, was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2004.
