VUMC construction projects progressing

At the Medical Center board meeting, Norman Urmy, executive vice president for Clinical Affairs and CEO of Vanderbilt University Hospital, provided an update on hospital and clinic building projects.

Floors 4, 5 and 6 of the $9.6 million Children’s Hospital Outpatient Care Tower will open in October. Floor 4 will be for General, Orthopaedic and Urologic surgery clinics; floor 5 will be for Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pulmonary, Allergy and Asthma, Anesthesia and Critical Care services; and floor 6 will house Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Genetics and Immunology.

The $79.5 million Phase II of Medical Center East will open in stages from February through June, 2005. Orthopaedics will occupy floors 3 and 4; Cardiology will occupy the fifth floor; the Bill Wilkerson Center and Otolaryngology will occupy floors 6, 7 and 8; Diabetes will have part of the eighth floor.

The $12 million Emergency Department renovation and expansion will open in spring of 2005. ED exam and the treatment rooms will increase from 27 to 46. The expansion includes a Chest Pain Center, a Stroke Center and a dedicated area for psychiatric patients.

An extensive renovation of the fifth floor of VUH will open in January. The floor will serve Cardiac and Neurosciences patients.

Light renovation of the 6th floor of VUH, also serving Cardiac and Neurosciences patients, was completed early this year. Renovation of the 11th floor of VUH will begin within a year; the floor will serve Burn patients.
