Dawn Vanderhoef, Ph.D.

Vanderhoef, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, is being recognized for her development of an education model using Web-based technology for clinical supervision. Specifically, the “Technology Triad” includes an online clinical log linked to diagnostic criteria, digital audio recordings stored and reviewed via encrypted server environment, and Saba-Centra software for Web-based conferencing.

Vanderhoef has pioneered the use of these three components to increase faculty supervisor and student interaction, provide active psychotherapy supervision for individuals and small groups of students in distance formats, and facilitate professional development for collaborative practice.

Vanderhoef and VUSN’s Jeff Gordon, Ph.D., have shared this technology model as consultants at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Centers in Memphis, where it is being used by Doctor of Nursing Practice students.

This technology model can also be used to evaluate psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner practice patterns and as a platform to develop a large national database to conduct practice outcomes evaluation and quality research.
