Week of events set to welcome VUSM students

On Monday, the newest class of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine — the class of 2009 — will be on the Medical Center Campus for a week's worth or orientation activities prior to the start of the school year.

The following is a partial list of orientation-related events and activities. Unless otherwise noted, events take place in Light Hall.

Monday, Aug. 8

9:30 a.m. — Welcome address, featuring Harry Jacobson, M.D., vice chancellor for Health Affairs, and Steven Gabbe, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine.

10:30 a.m. — “The 21st Century Doctor,” presented by Bonnie Miller, M.D., associate dean for Undergraduate Medical Education.

11 a.m. — “Nuts and Bolts,” presented by Scott Rodgers, M.D., assistant dean for Medical Student Affairs.

5 p.m. — Picnic at the home of Dean Gabbe and his wife, Patricia Temple, M.D., 877 South Curtiswood Lane.

Tuesday, Aug. 9

9 a.m. — “Professionalism,” presented by Bonnie Miller, M.D.

9:30 a.m. — “Your Journey in Becoming a Culturally Competent Physician,” presented by George Hill, Ph.D., associate dean for Diversity in Medical Education.

10:30 a.m. — Introduction to “Mountains Beyond Mountains,” presented by Bonnie Miller, M.D., and Sten Vermund, M.D., Ph.D., Amos Christie Chair for Global Health.

4:30 p.m. — Student to Student Advisor Program, presented by second- and third-year VUSM students.

6 p.m. — Dinner with student advisers.

Wednesday, Aug. 10

Noon — Tour of the VMS Web site and Knowledge Map, presented by Anderson Spickard III, M.D., Donna Schot and Ben Rosenbaum.

1 p.m. — “Introduction to Anatomy,” presented by Art Dalley, M.D.

2:30 p.m. — “Wellness — Thriving in the Medical School Environment,” presented by Scott Rodgers, M.D.

Friday, Aug. 12

3:30 p.m. — Parents orientation, Medical Research Building III

5 p.m. — Convocation and White Coat Ceremony, Chapman Quadrangle, Medical Center North.
