May. 2, 2018—Year-over-year growth in inpatient volumes across Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s adult clinical enterprise, three new floors of additional adult inpatient beds through the renovation of Medical Center East, along with the steady expansion of adult clinics throughout the region are among factors leading to the creation of the new roles of co-chiefs of staff for Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital (VUAH) and Clinics.
Apr. 5, 2018—After successfully leading Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Section of Surgical Sciences and serving as the Medical Center’s Surgeon-in-Chief since 2001, R. Daniel Beauchamp, MD, the John Clinton Foshee Distinguished Professor of Surgery, is stepping down. Beauchamp will be succeeded in this role by Seth Karp, MD, H. William Scott Jr. Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery and director of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center.
Apr. 5, 2018—Beginning July 1, Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Department of Urologic Surgery, which is currently housed within the Medical Center’s Section of Surgical Sciences, will become an independent department.
Jan. 18, 2018—James Mathis, JD, Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s (VUMC) Chief Compliance Officer, has accepted a new position as Chief Compliance Officer for UW Medicine, the academic health system of the University of Washington in Seattle. Mathis will depart VUMC on Jan. 22.
Jan. 11, 2018—David J. “D.J.” Kennedy, MD, clinical associate professor and residency program director in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with Stanford University’s Department of Orthopaedics, has been named chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). Kennedy will join the faculty on April 1.

Oct. 31, 2017—The Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Task Force for Empowerment and Well-being, a 16-member multidisciplinary group formed earlier this year to develop a deeper understanding of the nationwide problem of physician burnout and suggest solutions at VUMC, has made its initial recommendations.
Oct. 5, 2017—In a first-of-its-kind collaboration for both parties, schools in Allen County, Kentucky, are joining with Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt so sick children can receive a more comprehensive array of health care services while attending school through virtual visits with Vanderbilt clinicians.
Sep. 29, 2017—As Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s (VUMC) Division of Dermatology transitions from a division within the Department of Medicine to become the Medical Center’s newest clinical department, Mary-Margaret “Meg” Chren, M.D., professor of Dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has been named to serve as the department’s inaugural chair. She will join the faculty in January 2018.
