Vanderbilt University School of Nursing will host a free preview of the new PBS series, “Call the Midwife,” on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at Sarratt Cinema.

“Call the Midwife” provides insights into the world of midwifery and family life in the 1950s in East London. The series is told through the eyes of young nurse Jenny Lee as she begins work as a midwife alongside an order of nuns.

The series is based on the best-selling memoir by Jennifer Worth, and was considered a hit when it was broadcast earlier this year in the United Kingdom.
“This series is a terrific opportunity to bring the Nashville and Vanderbilt community together to discuss the roles of nurse-midwives; then in England and today in the United States” said Mavis Schorn, Ph.D., CNM, assistant dean of Academics at VUSN.

After screening the hourlong episode, the audience can participate in a panel discussion with Vanderbilt experts in nurse-midwifery and history.

Providing comments and taking questions will be: Margaret Buxton, CNM, clinical practice director of VUSN’s West End Women’s Health Center; Michelle Collins, Ph.D., CNM, director of VUSN’s Nurse-Midwifery Program; and James Epstein, Ph.D., Distinguished Chair of History.
The series will air locally on Nashville Public Television on Sept. 30.

No reservations are required. Sarratt Cinema doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and organizers encourage attendees to arrive early as the screening will begin promptly at 7 p.m.
