Cardiologist Rob Hood, M.D., assistant professor of Medicine and assistant chief medical officer for the clinics at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks, has been named associate chief medical officer for Vanderbilt Medical Group.
The position reports to VMG Chief Medical Officer Paul Sternberg Jr., M.D., the G.W. Hale Professor and chair of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
“Rob has done a terrific job with both doctors and nurses at One Hundred Oaks, fostering a collaborative working environment that stands as a model for us all,” Sternberg said. “He’s a proven, capable leader across disciplines and organizational boundaries. I’m very pleased to welcome him into this expanded role for VMG.”
VMG comprises Vanderbilt’s far-flung outpatient enterprise. VUMC’s rapid clinical volume growth has occurred disproportionately on the outpatient side: total visits per year have roughly doubled over the last decade, now exceeding 1.7 million.
According to Sternberg, Hood will focus on outpatient care on campus and at One Hundred Oaks.

A former managing partner of the Page Campbell Cardiology Group, Hood has based his practice in Nashville since 1986. In 1998 he joined Vanderbilt fulltime on a contractual basis, and he became a full-fledged member of VMG in 2006 when Page Campbell merged with Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute.

A 1980 graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Hood holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Florida and a Bachelor of Science degree from Tulane.
He served his internship, residency and cardiology fellowship at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta.
