Robin Steaban, MSN, R.N., VUMC associate chief nursing officer and chief administrative officer at the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute, has been promoted to the newly created position of Chief Nursing Officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics. In addition, Mitchell Edgeworth, MBA, chief operating officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital, has been promoted to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics.
The promotions of Steaban and Edgeworth accompany operational changes occurring within the Adult Enterprise focused around the reorganization of adult Patient Care Centers (PCCs) and the overall continuum of patient care delivery.
Historically, VUMC’s adult clinical enterprise has operated with a leadership model that has included separate chief nursing officers and chief operating officers for its hospital and clinics, resulting in parallel senior leadership teams.
Since the reorganized adult PCCs span both the acute inpatient and ambulatory patient care settings, these leadership teams are being reorganized into a single entity to better meet the needs of a clinical system equipped to address care models that are centered more on comprehensive management of common diseases, and that will deliver greater value for patients.
“As we continue to refine patient care delivery to better meet the needs of our patients now and in the future, we are fortunate to have strong leaders such as Robin and Mitch to help lead the way,” said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, M.D., deputy vice chancellor for Health Affairs and CEO of the Vanderbilt Health System.
“I appreciate their ongoing commitment to our patients, staff and faculty, and we want to welcome each into these new roles.”
Steaban joined VUMC in 1990 to serve as the nurse coordinator for the 7-North Cardiology Unit in Vanderbilt University Hospital and has assumed an increasing level of responsibility since.
She is well known for numerous contributions within the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute and elsewhere across the Medical Center, having led or served on dozens of initiatives, committees and work groups that have been instrumental in the improvement of patient care and have driven operational change across a multitude of clinical areas.
“Robin has been a transformational leader for nursing and patient care at Vanderbilt since her arrival; she is now positioned to continue that leadership in the role of CNO for the Adult Enterprise. I look forward to working with her and the other leaders of the Adult Enterprise and we strive to improve the quality and value of care for the patients and families that we serve,” said Marilyn Dubree, MSN, R.N., Executive Chief Nursing Officer.
Prior to joining Vanderbilt, Steaban served as a staff nurse and clinical nurse specialist at hospitals in Michigan, New York and Rhode Island. She received a Master of Science in Nursing from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Madonna College in Livonia, Michigan.
Edgeworth joined VUMC in 2012 as chief operating officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital, bringing with him a strong background in performance and organizational improvement. In the past two years he has made significant contributions to the Medical Center’s ongoing operational redesign process.
With experience and insights gained through years of service in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, he continues to lead numerous efforts that are increasing operational efficiency through processes redesign throughout Vanderbilt University Hospital and clinics.
“In Mitch’s short tenure with VUMC, he has proven to be a remarkable executive who has contributed immediately to our success. He combines both great experience and cultural sensitivity in moving forward our accomplishments on a number of fronts. Vanderbilt will have two superb leaders in Mitch and Robin, who together will bring energy and creativity to the continued evolution of our health care delivery system,” said David Posch, chief executive officer of Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics.
Edgeworth joined Vanderbilt from Quorum Health Resources, where he served from 2009 until 2012 as regional vice president and was responsible for the operational performance and strategic objectives of 12 hospitals located throughout Colorado, Kansas and New Mexico.
He also worked for Tenet Health System, serving as CEO for Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake in Dallas. His prior professional experience also includes tenure at Duke University Health System as a management engineer and manager of performances services.
Edgeworth earned his Master of Business Administration from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. His education also includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Lipscomb University and a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree from Georgia Tech. He began his career as an industrial engineer with Saturn Motor Corporation before transitioning into health care.
