The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Reading Clinic is seeking students and professional teachers to serve as part-time reading clinic tutors and teacher tutors during the summer 2015 program. The summer program begins June 15 and will consist of six weeks of daily 40-minute tutoring sessions scheduled Monday through Thursday, for about 10-15 hours per week.

The VKC Reading Clinic provides individualized, one-to-one tutoring using assessments and evidence-based instructional methods shown to promote reading. The summer 2015 session aims to serve struggling readers in grades K-8. Students will undergo non-diagnostic entry assessments to determine instructional needs and target individual tutoring. Progress will be measured regularly, with instruction adjusted accordingly. Parents will receive regular updates on their child’s progress during the session.

The position of Reading Clinic Tutor is reserved for undergraduate or graduate students with special education, education, speech and language or psychology majors. Experience teaching or tutoring children with or without disabilities, especially in reading, is strongly preferred. Tutors will work with children struggling with reading by evaluating their progress on instructional programs and developmental profiles, providing educational feedback to parents/guardians, giving weekly feedback and maintaining students’ files and records.

The Reading Clinic Teacher Tutor will plan and implement educational programs and activities for children struggling with reading. In addition, the teacher tutor communicates information relevant to the child’s education and development to their parent/guardian. Preferred qualifications are a bachelor’s degree in teaching with teacher licensure as well as experience teaching reading to students with and without disabilities.

Interested applicants should send a resume/CV to readingclinic@vanderbilt.edu. With availability and interest, both positions have the potential to continue during the fall 2015 and spring 2016 sessions at the clinic.
