The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) recently awarded Addison May, M.D., the Barry A. Shapiro Memorial Award for Excellence in Critical Care Management.
The award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the design and/or implementation of evidence-based practice that has significantly impacted clinical, operational or fiscal outcomes.
May was recognized for his role in creating the Multidisciplinary Surgical Critical Care Service at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and for advancements of quality and process improvements within the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).
May’s team constructed the computer-assisted IV insulin protocol that is now used institution-wide, introduced infection reduction and antibiotic stewardship initiatives that have had dramatic impact on reducing resistant infections within the SICU, and implemented airway safety processes that have significantly reduced airway loss.
“This award really recognizes the energies and successes of a large number of committed professionals in the SICU and here at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and reflects the excellence in care provided to critically ill surgical patients,” said May, Ingram Professor of Surgical Sciences, director of Surgical Critical Care and professor of Surgery and Anesthesiology.
“Recognition for our achievements in the SICU is a fabulous honor and I am proud to accept the award on the unit’s behalf.”
