Patients and medical teams reunited recently in the lobby of Langford Auditorium to celebrate the adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The hospital is home to the state’s largest ECMO program and the only provider in Tennessee with a transport component. Patients were given the chance to interact with other survivors as well as reconnect and thank caregivers for their lifesaving efforts. Since starting the adult program, more than 250 patients have been supported by ECMO, which provides temporary emergency mechanical support for critically ill patients to support heart and lung functions.
