C.J. Stimson, MD, JD, assistant professor of Urology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Value Transformation in the VUMC Office of Population Health.
In this role, Stimson will continue to provide medical leadership in the Office of Episodes of Care, working alongside Brittany Cunningham, MSN, RN, senior director, to develop VUMC’s commercial episodes offering, MyHealth Bundles and ensuring VUMC’s success in Medicare bundles.
In addition, Stimson will serve in a broader capacity to be a vital clinical voice informing and facilitating VUMC’s transition to value-based and accountable care. He will provide insight and guidance to the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network’s (VHAN) value agenda, leading further development of network-wide, standardized, evidence-based protocols of care. Stimson will provide clinical leadership for the Vanderbilt Health Employer Solutions team, which serves Middle Tennessee employers with a full suite of solutions to help their employees proactively manage their health. And starting in July 2021, Stimson will become Chief Medical Officer of the VUMC Employee Health Plan (EHP) upon the retirement of Roland “Ron” Eavey, MD, from the health plan CMO role.
Stimson will maintain his longstanding advisory role with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), where he supports the federal government’s transition from a volume- to value-based health care purchaser. He was the first surgeon at CMMI, providing clinical and regulatory expertise related to the development of alternative payment models.

In addition to his work with CMMI, Stimson has extensive health policy experience in the legislative branch at the federal level, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Health Policy Legislative Fellow to Republican and Democratic members, as well as in the GOP Doctors Caucus.
Stimson received his medical and law degrees from Vanderbilt University and completed his residency in urologic surgery at VUMC. At Johns Hopkins, he completed a fellowship in urologic oncology. He continues to care for patients at VUMC and the Nashville VA Medical Center, focusing on the surgical treatment for kidney, bladder and prostate cancer.
