Chill Out gives out 10,000 ice cream treats, 10,000 smiles

A tough decision: cookies and cream cone, orange sherbet pop up, chocolate crunch bar, strawberry crunch bar, or an ice cream sandwich

Words to put a smile on anyone’s face on a hot summer day: “Would you like some free ice cream?”

VUMC Chill Out, the annual Employee Celebration event, was held Friday, July 15 on the main campus, at One Hundred Oaks, and at the three regional hospitals, and there were plenty of smiles to go around.

About 10,000 ice cream treats were given out by more than 35 volunteer VUMC leaders during Chill Out.

Some scenes from the day:

Marilyn Dubree. MSN, RN, NE-BC, Executive Chief Nursing Officer, one of 35 VUMC leaders who staffed the event, gives an ice cream bar to Marcus Brazil of VUMC IT.
Irene Hong-McAtee, MD, Rachel Azevedo, MD, Adrienne Marler, DO, and medical student Alissa Cutrone are all smiles (trust us — even under the masks).
Randy Inman and Bernard Ahiatsi, both of Guest Services, opted for the strawberry crunch bars — apparently a good choice.
Another good choice from the freezer: the cookies and cream cone, selected by Teresa Witcher, BSN, and Ezelle McDonald, PhD, both of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.
Patient Care Attendant Jonathan Benton digs deep into the freezer for his choice, watched over by Derek Anderson, director of operations for Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
General Surgery residents Thomas Wong, MD, and Kyle Maughan, MD, operate on some frozen treats.
Jenny Slayton, MSN, RN, Senior Vice President for Quality, Safety and Risk Prevention, gives a bar and a smile to Suzanna Lonce of Clinical Pharmacology.
MLS students Kristen Rabbitt, Kaori Hardison, Lindsey Batts, and Esther Kim show how a summer day should be enjoyed.
