VUMC in the news: Dec. 5, 2023

The Washington Post reporter Joel Achenbach, Newsy anchor Del Walters and Voice of America News reporter Xiaoshan Xue interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for stories about the CDC’s life expectancy numbers and clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia among children in China. In the past few days, Schaffner has also been interviewed on several topics, Tennessee’s COVID-19 death toll now close to 30,000, early flu season, a new respiratory illness in China, the safety of COVID vaccines, blood type and susceptibility to COVID infection, and the uptick in flu cases. Outlets interviewing him include The New York Times, USA Today, Health, Lead Stories, The Tennessean, Verywell Health, Medical Economics, Bloomberg, Yahoo! Life, and Women’s Health.

WSMV Channel 4 reporter Danielle Jackson interviewed Ryan Starnes, Senior Director of Operations for Hospital at Home, and a patient for a story about VUMC’s Hospital at Home program.

Leonard Bacharier, MD, Janie Robinson and John Moore Lee Professor and professor of Pediatrics, was quoted by Healio in a story about an FDA panel voting against approving the drug gefapixant for unexplained chronic cough.

NewsNation and People magazine quoted Deepak Gupta, MD, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology, for a story about his study on reducing salt intake to lower blood pressure. This was the latest in a string of major national placement for Gupta and the study. Other outlets recently covering it include Fox News, WebMD, HealthDay, Medical News Today, Business Insider and The Week.

BioWorld reporter Mar de Miguel and LabRoots.com reporter Amielle Moreno interviewed Eric Skaar, PhD, Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology, for stories about his Nature study on the new C. diff structures.
