Ambient AI technology for clinical documentation launching at VUMC

Dragon Ambient Experience (DAX) Copilot, ambient AI technology for clinical documentation embedded in Epic, is coming to Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Wednesday, Jan. 15. This innovative technology will transform the way we deliver care by improving documentation efficiency, allowing our clinicians to focus more on what truly matters—patient care.  Initially, DAX Copilot will be available for clinicians in Ambulatory and Emergency Department settings.

DAX Copilot is an ambient, AI-driven scribe solution embedded in Epic, capturing patient-clinician conversations and creating high-quality clinical documentation in real time. This means:
• Less time charting: Reducing documentation burden for clinicians.
• Improved efficiency: Enhancing workflow and minimizing after-hours documentation.
• Enhanced patient experience: Allowing clinicians to engage with patients more fully.

VUMC began piloting DAX Copilot in March 2024 with ten Ambulatory users. Since then, the pilot has expanded to include 54 Ambulatory clinicians from multiple specialties and 37 Emergency Department clinicians. Pilot users provided feedback to VUMC and Microsoft about their use of the product, enabling enhancements over time.  During the pilot period, the top-utilizing clinicians across multiple specialties saw decreased pajama and overall documentation time. These same clinicians also saw an increase in appointments closed the same day.  Pilot user feedback was instrumental in demonstrating the value of this solution to our clinicians and was used to inform VUMC’s decision to invest in this technology.

“VUMC’s commitment to improving the quality and efficiency of patient care means utilizing leading healthcare technologies,” said Dara Mize, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Medicine and Chief Medical Information Officer.  “We’re excited to be able to expand access to this technology to our clinicians so they can spend less time in the EHR and more time on the things that are important to them.”

DAX Copilot currently works for clinicians in Ambulatory and Emergency Department settings on iOS devices. To use DAX Copilot, clinicians must have Haiku and use DAX-compatible note templates at the time of the visit with the patient. For clinicians who want to start using DAX Copilot as soon as possible, self-service training materials are available now on the DAX Copilot at Vanderbilt website. Here, you will find guides to getting started with DAX Copilot, including resources for downloading and installing Haiku and creating DAX-compatible note templates in eStar.  For clinicians who want assistance getting started with DAX Copilot, in-person and virtual guided training and one-to-one support options are also available on the website.
