Heidi Silver, RDS, PhD, director of the Vanderbilt Diet, Body Composition and Human Metabolism Core, has been in demand to help reporters include accurate nutrition information in their stories. She was interviewed by The New York Times for a story headlined, “How Healthy is Chicken Breast?” (answer: Pretty healthy); NBC News for a story about how much fruit to eat every day to promote healthy aging; and Good Housekeeping for a story about a new study on the importance of Vitamin D3.

The New York Times, Time magazine, New York Post, Men’s Journal, CNN and Fox News interviewed Andreana Holowatyj, PhD, MSCI, assistant professor of Hematology/Oncology and Cancer Biology, for stories about her study examining the rise in appendix cancers among millennials.

Schaffner was also quoted by reporters at other national and local outlets about various infectious disease topics. Among the outlets and topics: WVLT-TV in Knoxville (West Nile virus; those who watch to the end of the clip will, in a broadcast news rarity, hear the anchor say, “Those darn skeeters!”); CNN (a false rumor about the need for a “detox” after a COVID vaccine); and HuffPost/Yahoo! News (a “new” COVID symptom that isn’t actually new).

NBC News interviewed John Graves, PhD, professor of Health Policy, for a story about why millions of Americans would lose health insurance under the House GOP budget bill.

Newsweek reporter Jasmine Laws interviewed Carrie Fry, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy, for a story about whether having greater focus on tackling substance use disorders could help to reduce costs for Medicaid.

WTVF News Channel 5, interviewed Ryan Millager, doctoral candidate, about a Vanderbilt University Medical Center camp to help children that stutter build community.

Healio staff writer Hunter Firment interviewed Alex Diamond, DO, director, Youth Sports Health Center, for a story about the impact of NIL on physicians treating college and high school athletes. The story is the cover story for June.

WSMV Channel 4 News interviewed Veronique Belzil, PhD, director of the Vanderbilt ALS Research Center, for a story about ALS research.

LifeFlight Event Medicine’s tips and preparation for this year’s CMA Fest were covered by The Tennessean, WTVF News Channel 5, and others. The Tennessean piece included an interview with Stephan Russ, MD, executive medical director for Vanderbilt LifeFlight.
