Gabe Tiamson, BSN, RN works in the Adult 4 unit at Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital. He is one of the latest Vanderbilt Health DAISY Award winners.

Tiamson’s parents, Lito Tiamson, RN, in Neurological surgery and Carmela Tiamson, RN, in Gastroenterology, are both employees at Vanderbilt Health and were present to witness the surprise ceremony celebrating Gabe’s exceptional care.

From the nomination

“Gabe is a ray of sunshine during my stay. He always has a smile on his face and greeted you warmly. He took extra care to know how I was feeling both physically and mentally. Gabe was always available to talk about my mental health journey or anything about life in general. He held me accountable and really looked out for me even when he wasn’t my nurse. I simply cannot choose just one situation. Gabe has been my nurse for several days from the beginning when I was at my worst. He has consistently treated me with kindness and genuine concern. He can be lighthearted, which brings light to all the patients. I can say that Gabe is the most caring and skilled nurse I have ever had. He puts me at ease and always shows me respect. This nurse stays three steps ahead of me and is very loving and caring. Vandy Psych is lucky to have him.”

About DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition for extraordinary nurses who exemplify compassion toward patients and families.

Vanderbilt Health distributes the award in partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to honor the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who died of complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Barnes’ family was moved by the care they received from his nurses and wanted to recognize them to preserve his memory. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Vanderbilt Health nurse committees determine the individual recipients. Previous recipients of the DAISY Award are here. The award is open to all licensed nurses, and anyone can nominate — including co-workers, patients and their families.
