From the nomination

“After about 3-4 back-to-back sleepless nights, it’s kind of hard to get jazzed about hitting the road and coming for an infusion. However, all that changes once we get here. We are so graciously greeted by everyone we meet, from the lady in front of the doorway, the front desk check-in people, Zoe in the lab, intake, our dear friend and might as well be a doctor, Liz Winkler, to each of the kind and attentive nurses hooking up the infusion! Ingram Cancer Center is staffed with EXCELLENT, efficient caring people BUT our nurse, Ashley C., is the one I have to dote on today.

Ashley greeted us with a smile that warms the heart. She comes right in asking what we’d like to drink, does he want a warm blanket and even adjusts his pillow, all before the infusion even gets started. Within 5 minutes, in walks Ashley with meds in hand, hooks up his meds and we are off! It now becomes a countdown. He’s drilling Ashley about how long it’s going to take, can she fix his pillow, he needs the warm blanket around his feet. Mind you, I’ve done this once already, but nothing can match what Ashley can do for him! She is awesome and we would love to acknowledge her nursing skills yes, but her “people” skills go above and beyond as well! THANK YOU ASHLEY FOR JOBS WELL DONE!”

About DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition for extraordinary nurses who exemplify compassion toward patients and families.

Vanderbilt Health distributes the award in partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to honor the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who died of complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Barnes’ family was moved by the care they received from his nurses and wanted to recognize them to preserve his memory. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Vanderbilt Health nurse committees determine the individual recipients. Previous recipients of the DAISY Award are here. The award is open to all licensed nurses, and anyone can nominate — including co-workers, patients and their families.

Nominations for DAISY Awards may be made here.
