Nate Miller

Nathaniel Miller, MD, MMHC, associate professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, has been named to the 40 Under 40 Class of 2026 by the Nashville Business Journal.

The Nashville Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 recognizes outstanding young professionals making an impact in the Nashville area.

Miller serves as associate chief of staff at Vanderbilt University Hospital and executive director of Regional Emergency Medicine. Emergency medicine is the front line, frequently exposing complex health care system issues. “I spend my clinical time taking care of individual patients and have my health systems leader time trying to address those larger population-level system issues exposed in my clinical time,” Miller said.

Miller’s current health systems focus is on patient access and capacity. His team is developing an acute care clinic designed to serve patients who are too complex for urgent care but do not require the full resources of an emergency department.

“Being named to the NBJ 40 Under 40 is a tremendous honor, which I think is a reflection on the meaningful work that Vanderbilt Health, the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Regional Operations Control Center have taken on with the expansion from a health center into a health system,” Miller said.

Miller was initially drawn to Vanderbilt Health by its emergency medicine residency program, which carries a national reputation for strong clinical training and resident education. He joined the faculty after completing his training and has remained committed to the institution’s patient-centered culture.

“Nashville truly is ‘The Healthcare City’ and is a unique hub for health care innovation that is positively changing the way health care is delivered across the country,” he said.

Miller earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. He received a Master of Management in Health Care from Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management and was a 2024 fellow with the Nashville Health Care Council.
