Reed Omary, MD, MS, Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and chair of Vanderbilt’s Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, has been elected to the board of directors of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD).
He will serve as one of four councilors on the eight-member board, which includes four officers. A non-profit organization, SCARD provides a forum for discussion of topics of mutual interest among radiology department chairs. The group is dedicated to advancing radiology by the promotion of medical education, research and patient care.
“In this new role, I am honored to work together with chairs from other top-tier institutions to advance the core missions of academic radiology,” Omary said. “Much like our specialty, the board functions as a dynamic, forward-thinking team.”
In addition to his Radiology leadership at VUMC, Omary co-leads Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s strategic planning efforts and is the director of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Medical Innovators Development Program.
He is also an avid public speaker who promotes innovation in health care within multiple national radiology organizations and for the general public via his podcast, “Innovation Activists: Designing Health Care’s Future.”
Omary earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Northwestern University’s six-year Honors Program in Medical Education.
He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology and a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Virginia.
