Shubhada Jagasia, MD, MMHC, professor of Medicine and chief of staff for Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital and Clinics, has accepted a new position as President and Chief Executive Officer for Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown and West Hospitals. She will be leaving Vanderbilt University Medical Center this month.
Jagasia joined VUMC in 2001 and advanced through a series of increasingly responsible academic and administrative leadership roles. In 2018 she was promoted to chief of staff for Adult Hospital and Clinics and has served ably in this position alongside fellow chief of staff for Perioperative and Critical Care Service, Warren Sandberg, MD, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.
“Dr. Jagasia has played an important part in our clinical enterprise, including during the past year when her leadership was instrumental in our pandemic response. As the leader of our COVID service line she helped bring a cohesive approach to the successful care of thousands of patients treated for the virus in our hospitals and clinics,” said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, MD, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer for VUMC. “I wish Shubhada the best with her new responsibilities at Ascension and express my gratitude for her years of service to our patients and the Medical Center.”
Prior to her role as chief of staff, Jagasia served as vice chair for Clinical Affairs for the Department of Medicine. She was also the medical director of multiple Vanderbilt endocrinology clinics located on the 21st Avenue campus and in surrounding communities, in addition to serving as the inpatient medical director in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism.
“Dr. Jagasia has earned the respect of many colleagues across the academic and clinical enterprises as she assumed sequential leadership roles, progressively increasing her scope of influence and responsibility. Her growth into each of these roles and training at the Owen Graduate School equip her well to undertake her new position,” said David Raiford, MD, Chief of Clinical Staff for VUMC and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the School of Medicine. “She has been a terrific partner, and I wish her the very best going forward.”
Appointed as medical director for the Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Clinic in 2012, she has been responsible for numerous advancements in diabetes care at VUMC, such as initiating the gestational diabetes clinic and establishing the Inpatient Glucose Management Service. Much of her clinical interest and research has focused on the management of endocrine diseases during pregnancy, predominately gestational diabetes.
“I would like to thank Vanderbilt University Medical Center for giving me many opportunities to grow both professionally and personally, and I am forever indebted to my educators, mentors and collaborators. It has been a privilege and honor to serve VUMC and its patients. I am truly excited about my role at Ascension Saint Thomas, as it will allow me to continue to serve the Nashville community and improve its health care,” said Jagasia.
In addition to being actively involved in the tripartite mission, Jagasia serves on multiple committees and advisory groups that span a breadth of the Medical Center’s clinical and operational initiatives.
Jagasia holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. She received postdoctoral fellowship training in the Department of Biochemistry at St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
She underwent residency training in internal medicine through the University of Tennessee at Baptist Hospital and fellowship training in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism through Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Jagasia earned a Master of Management in Health Care from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management.
A successor for the role of chief of staff for Adult Hospitals and Clinics will be named later.
