Specializing in myeloma, amyloidosis and other plasma cell disorders, hematologist and medical oncologist Muhamed Baljević, MD, recently joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center as associate professor of Medicine. He takes appointments at the Vanderbilt Hematology Clinic, located in The Vanderbilt Clinic on the main campus of Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

With his expert understanding and keen interest in plasma cell disorders, he has fast become a vital member to our hematology team,” said Ben Ho Park, MD, PhD, B.F. Byrd Fr. Professor of Oncology and director of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.
Baljević’s clinical interests include multiple myeloma and AL amyloidosis. He directs the Vanderbilt Amyloidosis Multidisciplinary Program and serves as disease team lead for plasma cell dyscrasias and lymphomas.
As director of plasma cell disorders research at VUMC, Baljević focuses his research on mechanisms of proteasome inhibitor drug resistance, post-transplant immune reconstitution, and genomic aspects of the transformation of premalignant plasma cell conditions to plasma cell malignant states.

Baljević received his MD from Cornell University’s Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, completing residency training in internal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, followed by a three-year fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Prior to joining VUMC, Baljević served as assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
In addition to fluent English, Baljević is fluent in languages of the Balkans, including his native Bosnian.
