Four Vanderbilt Medical Center employees have received Risk Management Awards recognizing their efforts to make VMC a safer place for patients.
• Matthew Box, manager of sterile processing at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, was recognized for reducing the cost of the sterilization. He also implemented process improvements which resulted in an increased instrument completion rate and an increase in sterility assurance.
• William Gregg, M.D., M.P.H., an internist and assistant professor of Biomedical Informatics, combined technology and medicine to develop Star Panel dashboards for chronic disease management.
• Tom Abramo, M.D., director of the Pediatric Emergency Department, and Barb Shultz, R.N., manager of the Pediatric Emergency Department, were recognized for their dual role in initiatives to get patients processed and treated faster and reduce the rate of patients who left without being seen.
“These are really good examples of how all different roles in the organization are involved in improving patient care and safety,” said Diane Moat, R.N., J.D., assistant director of Clinical Risk Management.
The Risk Management Awards, now in their third year, recognize nurses, attendings/fellows, house staff and other employees who have made significant changes in processes to improve patient care and safety. Winners receive a framed award and $1,000.
