Webcast to probe cell phone safety

Reid Thompson, M.D., director of the Vanderbilt Brain Tumor Center, will wade into the swirling debate about whether cell phones induce brain cancer during a Webcast, Friday, Aug. 22, from noon to 1 p.m.

He will discuss what scientists know about the genesis of cancerous brain tumors during the “Patient Power” webcast hosted by Andrew Schorr, a leukemia survivor and patient educator.

A highly publicized memo from the director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute about the risk of cell phones revived debate about their safety.

“There have been several well-designed studies researching a possible link between cell phone exposure and brain cancer and right now the science doesn't support this link,” Thompson said.

Ezra Fitz, a 31-year-old Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center patient, will join Thompson and Schorr.

Listeners can catch the webcast live at www.patientpower.info, e-mail questions to questions@patientpower.info, or call in and join the discussion at (877) 711-5611.
