Planning Commission honors Alliance’s Lawson
Vanderbilt's Jim Lawson was recently recognized for his 15 years of service on the Metropolitan Nashville Planning Commission. A certificate was presented to Lawson at the Metro Council meeting on July 17.
The Planning Commission is responsible for determining the design standards and development plans — both commercial and residential — for Nashville and Davidson County.
Lawson, deputy director of the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, was appointed to a four-year term on the Commission in 1992 by Mayor Phil Bredesen.
Lawson served two four-year terms under him and stayed on the commission for an additional seven years at the request of Mayor Bill Purcell. He served as chairman of the board during the last eight years of his appointment.
Lawson also served as the commission's representative on the Board of Parks and Recreation for nine years and has since been appointed as a regular Park's board member for a five-year term.
He recently resigned from the board of the Metro Planning Commission.
“[Jim] Lawson has distinguished himself as a community leader of whom we can all be proud,” said a statement from the Metro Council. “Throughout his service he demonstrated the utmost professionalism, ability and integrity, winning the unbridled respect and admiration of his colleagues.”
