VUSM sets events to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine has cancelled classes on Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Dean's office, the Office for Diversity and the Vanderbilt Student National Medical Association have planned various activities to celebrate the national holiday.
"We are very appreciative of the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Jacobson and Dean Gabbe in supporting the opportunity for students to commemorate the life and ideas of Martin Luther King Jr. through service to our community during his holiday,” said George C. Hill, Ph.D., Levi Watkins, Jr. Professor and associate dean for Diversity in Medical Education. “These are important experiences for the students, many of which they have initiated themselves."
Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the day's activities and volunteer opportunities in honor of King's legacy.
Schedule of events:
• 9 a.m. — Convene at Jefferson Street Baptist Church or Bethel AME to join the city-wide march to the TSU Gentry Center
• 11:30 a.m. — Depart march site to return to Vanderbilt for the School of Medicine Convocation
• 11:45 a.m. — Lunch available in South Lobby of Light Hall — Reservation required
• Noon — School of Medicine Convocation in 208 Light Hall with Dean Steven Gabbe, M.D., including video “Music in the Movement”
• 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m. — Service activities with various organizations — Reservation required
• 7 p.m. — Candlelight Vigil at Benton Chapel. Guest Speaker: Bishop Joseph Warren Walker, III
