Joey Barnett, Ph.D., associate professor of Pharmacology and Microbiology and Immunology, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Southeast Affiliate of the American Heart Association (AHA).
Barnett, a longtime AHA volunteer, most recently served on the National Review Panel and on the board of the Davidson County American Heart Association Board of Directors.
He previously served as the president of the local board.
The Southeast Affiliate, which oversees five states in the region, focuses on research, education and community service programs.
Vanderbilt currently has 33 grants totaling nearly $4 million to aid in the research of cardiovascular disease.
“Vanderbilt's hugely successful partnership with the local AHA in hosting the Heartwalk is often held up as a model of community involvement and leadership in the fight against heart disease,” Barnett noted.
