Alan D. Cherrington, Ph.D.
Alan D. Cherrington, Ph.D., professor and chairman of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been named president of the American Diabetes Association. He is the first non-M.D. to serve as ADA president.
“Alan's election as president of the ADA is in recognition of his many years of outstanding research in the field of diabetes, and of his equally long and dedicated service to the ADA.,” said Daryl K. Granner, M.D., director, Vanderbilt Diabetes Center.
Cherrington earned his Ph.D. in Endocrinology from the University of Toronto, and he recently celebrated his 30-year anniversary as a member of the Vanderbilt faculty.
Cherrington, who also is Charles H. Best Professor of Diabetes Research, has made major contributions to current understanding of diabetes.
In particular, his work helped define how hormones such as glucagon and the nervous system can affect glucose production and glucose uptake by the liver.
