Sam S. Chang, MD, Patricia and Rodes Hart Endowed Professor of Urologic Surgery and Oncology, has been elected trustee of the American Board of Urology (ABU), with a six-year term beginning March 21.
Chang, also the first chief surgical officer at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, was nominated to the ABU by the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS).
“I am honored to be named as one of the two new trustees of the ABU, whose mission is to serve the public by working with clinicians to ensure high quality and safe care,” Chang said.
“This appointment further validates the national esteem and reputation of our department, formerly led by Dr. Joseph A. Smith Jr. and currently by Dr. David Penson.”
The ABU was founded in 1935 to establish and maintain standards of certification for urologists. It works with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe and ethical urologic care.
Six urologic societies nominate to the ABU and sponsor its activities, including the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Academic Urologists, and the Societies for Pediatric Urology.
“This is a very important position. The American Board of Urology protects the public by certifying American urologists to ensure the safe practice of urology in the U.S.,” Penson said. “I can think of no one more deserving of this honor than Sam Chang. He is truly one of the best urologists in the country and will serve patients well in this role.”
