Year in Review 2024: Medical Center shines in several national rankings

During the past year, Vanderbilt University Medical Center placed highly in several national rankings and was honored with numerous awards.

• Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt was again named a state, regional and national leader in pediatric health care, achieving the title of No. 1 children’s hospital in Tennessee and sharing the top spot in the Southeast, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.

In the 2024-2025 Best Children’s Hospitals report, Monroe Carell also ranked nationally in 10 out of 11 pediatric specialty programs. New this year, the report added pediatric and adolescent behavioral health to the list of pediatric specialties. Monroe Carell has made the Best Children’s Hospitals list for 18 consecutive years, every year since the ranking’s inception in 2007.

• Monroe Carell was again named a Leapfrog Top Hospital for 2024, earning the designation among an elite group of children’s hospitals across the nation.

Monroe Carell is one of only eight children’s hospitals in the U.S. and the only one in Tennessee to receive a spot on the Top Hospitals list this year.

• Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital (VBH) received an “A” in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring and Fall 2024 Hospital Safety Grades, a national recognition for patient safety, earning its fourth and fifth consecutive “A” ratings.

This achievement awarded VBH the “Straight A” designation, highlighting its continuous commitment to safeguarding patients from preventable harm and enhancing their quality of care. The Leapfrog Safety Grade, issued twice a year, evaluates hospitals based on 30 national performance measures, including the prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries.

• VBH was also awarded four out of five stars for overall hospital quality by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This marked the second year in a row that VBH earned high marks from CMS for quality of care.

CMS assigns star ratings to U.S. hospitals each year based on 46 quality measures. The more stars a hospital receives, the better its performance is, based on the metrics CMS assesses.

• VUMC was recognized with the 2024 Best Workplace for Men in Nursing Award from the American Association for Men in Nursing. It was the fifth time VUMC received the award.

Criteria for the award included recruitment materials featuring men in nursing, strategic plans to increase gender diversity, historical evidence demonstrating an increase in the number of men in nursing and evidence of male nurse involvement. About 10% of VUMC’s nurses are male.

• VUMC was named a leading health system in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), according to Becker’s Healthcare.

According to a list compiled by Becker’s Healthcare and the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at the University of California San Diego, VUMC was cited as one of 11 health systems pioneering “demonstrated, outcomes-based AI solutions” thanks to the leadership of Vanderbilt’s Department of Biomedical Informatics and its new AI Discovery & Vigilance to Accelerate Innovation & Clinical Excellence (ADVANCE) Center.

• Vanderbilt University School of Medicine ranked 10th in the nation in total research grant support provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in fiscal year 2023, according to figures compiled by the nonprofit Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

VUSM, which received $527.7 million in direct and indirect NIH grant support in fiscal year 2023, has been among the top 10 U.S. medical schools in NIH funding for six of the last 10 years. The school’s clinical, research and teaching missions are provided largely through its affiliated, nonprofit VUMC.

• The Urology and Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery residency programs at VUMC were both ranked No. 1 in the U.S. by reputation, according to the Doximity Residency Navigator.

Each year, Doximity Residency Navigator publishes residency program rankings by specialty which are “powered by peer nominations, ratings and hand-written reviews.” Factors considered include culture, clinical diversity, career guidance and overall satisfaction.

• VUMC was recognized for excellence in managing its medical supplies and equipment, earning a spot on a highly regarded national ranking for the first time.

Vanderbilt Health placed 25th in the Gartner Healthcare Supply Chain Top 25 for 2024, released by Gartner Inc., a technology research and consulting firm based in Stamford, Connecticut.
