Heart health for older people; preemie spends 350 days in NICU; Dolly mentions Vanderbilt’s care and says she’s doing well; plus other news stories with VUMC sources.

Healthline reporter Gigen Mammoser interviewed Eiman Jahangir, MD, associate professor of Medicine, for a story about heart-healthy habits to adopt to protect your heart later in life.

People magazine reporter Sam Gillette wrote a story about preemie Gabriel Golden who was born weighing 1 pound, and who spent 350 days in the NICU, quoting Meaghan Ransom, MD, assistant professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology, who was part of Gabriel’s care team.

Dolly Parton mentioned visiting VUMC for her health care in a message to fans that she released Oct. 8. There had been rumors that she was very ill, and the video message, titled “I ain’t dead yet,” was intended to dispel those rumors. Because of Parton’s popularity, her message mentioning Vanderbilt was covered by news media worldwide. Here is one example, from Canada’s CBC.

The Ivanhoe Broadcast News story about CAR-T immunotherapy with Olalekan Oluwole, MD, associate professor of Medicine, and patient Kyle Stephens, has been released to local television affiliates nationwide. Here is an example of its use on local news, from WNEM TV5 News in Saginaw, Michigan.

Everyday Health reporter Korin Miller interviewed Austin Kirschner, MD, PhD, associate professor of Radiation Oncology in the Program in Cancer Biology, for a story about the use of radiotherapy for osteoarthritis. The story was picked up by Archyde and others.

Channel News Asia reposted The New York Times story featuring Kristen Scarpato, MD, associate professor of Urology, speaking about treatment choices for prostate cancer.

The Hospitalist reporter Ruth Jessen Hickman interviewed Sunil Kripalani, MD, professor of Medicine and Health Policy, for a story about the impacts of poor patient health literacy. 

William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, was quoted by several news outlets about public health issues, including WAFF-TV in Huntsville, Alabama (influenza cases already occurring locally); NBC’s “Today” show (the best time to get a flu shot); and WebMD ( the flu season’s quiet start nationally).

Ciaran Considine, PhD, associate professor of Clinical Neurology, was quoted in a Parade story with the teasing headline, “People with a lot of energy do this one thing every day, according to neurologists.” That one thing: exercise.

Jennifer ‘Piper’ Below, PhD, professor of Medicine, was quoted in Smithsonian in a story about genetic research into the causes of stuttering.

National Geographic quoted Eva Parker, MD, assistant professor of Dermatology, in a story about how a warming planet is wreaking havoc on the skin. 

Medpage Today reporter Kristina Fiore interviewed Kathryn Edwards, MD, professor of Pediatrics, emerita,  for a story about the CDC’s Vaccine Safety Office.
