Nurse saves baby born in back seat of car in Medical Center East parking lot
School of Nursing student Steven Welton will never forget the first baby he delivered. Welton took charge when Elijah Youssef was born unexpectedly in the back seat of the family’s Honda outside Medical Center East last week. Welton is halfway through VUSN’s ASN to MSN program for registered nurses who have associate degrees, but he’d never before delivered a baby nor assisted in a delivery. -

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine to offer new master’s degree in genetic counseling
Genetic counseling is one of the fastest growing health professions in the country. Demand for genetic counselors is far outpacing the number of trained specialists, prompting the creation of a new degree program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. The Board of Trust recently approved a master of genetic counseling degree, and the first students are expected to enroll for the fall 2019 semester. -

15 faculty members elected as AAAS fellows
Fifteen Vanderbilt faculty members conducting a range of biomedical and clinical research have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Six of the 15 have received funding through the university’s Trans-Institutional Programs initiative, which facilitates research and teaching collaborations across disciplines and are a core pillar of the university’s Academic Strategic Plan. -

VUPD designates area for safe exchange of items bought, sold online
Vanderbilt University Police Department has designated an “Exchange Area” or “Safe Deal Zone” to provide a safe environment for Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff to trade legal new or used items bought or sold online through various apps.
