The General Assembly of the State of Tennessee is honoring the life and accomplishments of Vivien Thomas, an African-Am- erican laboratory assistant at Vanderbilt from 1930-1941 who developed several operative techniques, designed surgical instruments, supervised surgical laboratories, and instructed at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for more than 35 years.

Adult patients now have a convenient new option for hearing evaluations, hearing aid consultations and fittings and other services with the opening of a new audiology clinic in Green Hills.

Lori Deitte, MD, professor and vice chair of Education for the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, was recently appointed to the American College of Radiology (ACR) Board of Chancellors as the chair of the Commission on Publications and Lifelong Learning. She assumed this position at the ACR 2018 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The Pediatric Speech and Language Clinic at Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center recently held the second annual Augmentative and Alternative Communication summer camp.

Since it began 16 years ago, the Vanderbilt Summer Science Academy (VSSA) has provided research experiences for roughly 2,000 undergraduates from colleges around the country. Nearly half are members of under-represented minority groups; many are the first in their families to pursue graduate or medical degrees.

As the 96 members of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s first-year class took their seats at the front of 208 Light Hall, Bonnie Miller, MD, MMHC, welcomed them and their family members to the school’s annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony.
