Austin set to enhance marketing initiatives

Jill Austin, MBA, chief marketing officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, will become assistant vice chancellor for Strategic Marketing and chief marketing officer, effective July 1.

“Jill has been a key part of the leadership team at the Medical Center for some time now, and I'm pleased that she is taking on this new title in recognition of her hard work and the importance of marketing to our missions and goals,” said Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., vice chancellor for Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.

“I am fortunate to work with such a talented team and look forward to building on the collaborative efforts under way across the University and Medical Center,” Austin said.

“Vanderbilt is a great place to work. Every day there is something new to learn from people who are doing amazing things at this institution. It is a privilege to spend time giving visibility to the incredible work of my colleagues.”

Austin recently oversaw the production of a highly rated personalized medicine documentary that aired this month in Nashville and other markets.

She has also been responsible for spearheading the Medical Center's adoption of the University's visual identity program, developing a national marketing strategy and launching a social media policy and usage guidelines.

Since assuming responsibility for all marketing functions at VUMC last summer, Austin and her team have continued to build and maintain Vanderbilt's position as the preferred health care provider in the region.

“Jill's proven ability to set and execute strategic marketing initiatives has been a key factor as VUMC continues to position itself locally, regionally and now nationally as an innovative institution that can deliver results in a life-changing way,” said Beth Fortune, vice chancellor for Public Affairs.
“Jill understands where we need to go and knows how we will get there.”

Austin graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a double major in communications and music and later received her MBA in marketing from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt.

She served as vice president of Global Marketing and Sales for Nortel Networks and did consulting work with Kipp and Associates before coming to Vanderbilt in 2006.
