The Credo Award is given to staff and faculty who exemplify the Medical Center's standards for service and all-around professionalism.

Credo Awards went to James Barnett, a nursing professional development specialist with the Vanderbilt Professional Nurse Practice Program, and Linda MacDonald-Bates, a nurse in the Infusion Center at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks.

Barnett’s nomination read in part, “He has worked with all the new nurses at some point in time, and they all still know that he is the best source of education about Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt patient care, and they continue to seek his knowledge. Always with kindness in his heart and a smile on his face.

“Everyone should hope his disposition rubs off on them — our patients and co-workers would love it. If James could be cloned, Vanderbilt should want to have as many as possible of him, he is great!”

Bates’ nomination included this excerpt from a commendation sent by a patient: “I was very anxious and teary today. As soon as I got in the chair and Linda asked me how I was feeling, I teared up again (I hate being that out of control!).

“She immediately gave me a great big hug and said that she knew this is just a rotten, mean disease, and it takes rotten, mean meds to beat it.

“She made me laugh. Then she brought in a volunteer who has been through this before and offered me a chance to visit with someone who has ‘been there and done that.’ Linda made me feel like a person, not a patient, and not a number. She deserves to be recognized for her compassion, caring, and most of all, for quickly recognizing exactly what I needed to feel more comfortable with treatments.”

Nancy Proctor, chief information officer for hospitals, received the Five Pillar Leader Award, which is given to staff and faculty who exemplify Medical Center leadership standards.

Proctor’s nomination read in part, “Nancy is a leader who models respect and values others’ ideas and contributions. She has a positive, friendly style that invites and encourages staff to share concerns without fear. When you introduce yourself to someone at VUMC and you say that you work with Nancy Proctor they often say, ‘I know her and I think that she’s great. You must enjoy working with her.’ And from those of us who are lucky to work with Nancy daily, we respond, ‘We certainly do!’”

The Credo Award and Five Pillar Leader Award are conferred every three months.
