As cranes fly high over Vanderbilt University Hospital's Critical Care Tower addition, construction is also taking place a little closer to the ground.

Scaffolding with black plastic has been erected in the area between the Courtyard Café and

The Vanderbilt Clinic to shield construction on a new blood bank and offices for the Department of Anesthesiology.

These new areas will be located on top of the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic on the fourth floor of the Critical Care Tower.

Moving the blood bank will increase efficiency by consolidating the operations at VUH and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

The vacated space will be used to increase the size of the post-anesthesia care unit to better accommodate patients from the 12 new operating rooms in the Critical Care Tower.

The additional office space for Anesthesiology will accommodate the anticipated increase of operating room cases.

The Critical Care Tower is expected to open in November.
